Legitimacy Committee of Damascus and Rif Dimashq announces mobilization in Eastern Ghouta

Field and local developments:

The Legitimacy Committee of Damascus and Rif Damashq announced mobilisation in Eastern Ghouta. It called on factions to empty their prisons, announce amnesty and to start practical and public steps under one command; namely the Free Syrian Army (FSA).

The Syrian Civil Defense (White Helmets) has documented 661 civilian deaths and 2,373 injured in Eastern Ghouta from the period between February 19 - March 5. The Civil Defense has demanded the UN and Security Council to implement Resolution 2401 and to take all measures necessary in order to stop the bloodshed in Ghouta.

On Tuesday, the spokesman for Jaysh al-Islam, Hamza Berkdar, told SMART that the group had not discussed with Russia the matter of exiting besieged Eastern Ghouta. Berkdar considered the fighters in Ghouta as “not like the al-nusra front which sells its country and hands over their homes to the government and its militias on a plate of gold”.

On Tuesday, the Syrian Liberation Front gained control of the villages of Maarshurin and Babila located in Maarrat al-Nu’man, Northern Idlib. They then headed towards the village of Khan al-Dubul. This all occurred amid ongoing clashes between the two sides.

Suspected Russian warplanes launched three rocket strikes on the farms in the town of al-Tamaniaa, south of Idlib. The strikes coincided with artillery shelling on the town by the loyalist forces. Warplanes also launched similar raids on the city of Jisr al-Shughour and the village of al-Ghassaniya, west of Idlib.

The al-Sham Corps announced that during the night it retracted an attempt by Syrian loyalist forces to advance towards the villages of Khalisa, Zammar and Tal al-Tawil, about 35 km southwest of Aleppo, Northern Syria. The failed attempt killed more than 15 members of the loyalist forces. Earlier, Jaysh al-Azza crashed a reconnaissance aircraft while flying over the town of al- Lataminah, north of Hama.

On Tuesday, the commander of a faction in the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) reported that they relocated 1,700 fighters from Eastern Syria towards Afrin, a region north of Aleppo, Northern Syria. This came after four factions the SDF announced the relocation of their members from Deir ez-Zor to Afrin on Tuesday.

A car bomb exploded at the Turkish Post Office (PTT), near the Free Police Station in the city of al-Bab, east of Aleppo, wounding four civilians. The wounded, who included a girl, were transferred to the city hospital. One was taken to a Turkish hospital for treatment due to the critical nature of his injury.

Political and International Developments:

Today, the UN Security Council is to hold an emergency meeting in which they are to discuss the situation within Eastern Ghouta, in the capital of Damascus, as well as the ongoing failure of bodies to comply with a truce in the Security Council’s Resolution 2401 which was approved on Feb 2.
