Russia engages in Daraa battle; Sheikh al-Karamah forces warn of provocations in as-Suwayda; Kurdish security forces announce state of emergency in al-Raqqa

On Sunday, Russia engaged in the operation launched by the loyalist forces in Daraa, Southern Syria. Russian warplanes raided the cities and towns of Eastern Daraa.

Military sources reported that Russian warplanes took off from the Hmeimim military airport and launched 22 airstrikes on Daraa’s eastern countryside. Most of the airstrikes targeted the city of Busr al-Harir.

Several loyalist forces were killed during an attempt to advance in the al-Lajat area, 25 kilometers east of Daraa.

Mortar shelling from the Southern Central Operation Room targeted the city of Daraa, killing two civilians, including a child.

Local sources, who preferred to stay anonymous for security reasons, reported that the shells targeted the al-Sabil neighborhood, adding that the shelling injured five civilians.

The Sheikh al-Karamah forces warned Russia of any provocation in the as-Suwayda governorate, Southern Syria, considering Russia's last statement as a "very dangerous" escalation.

Local newspapers reported that on June 20, 2018, a meeting occurred between Russian officers, Syrian security commanders, and Druze clergies in as-Suwayda. During the meeting, Russia said that there are terrorist groups in as-Suwayda, including the Rijal al-Karamah group.

The al-Karamah forces stated that any violation against men in as-Suwayda is a declaration of war, adding that they refuse to hand over their weapons, which they use to defend their hometown.

The general command of the Asayish security forces of the Kurdish Autonomous Administration announced a state of emergency in the city of al-Raqqa, Northeastern Syria, after the Asayish forces obtained information about Islamic State groups entering the city. The announcement coincided with growing hostility between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the al-Raqqa Rebels Brigade.

The Asayish announced on the official website of the SDF that their intelligence service obtained information about ISIS groups infiltrating the city. As a result, the Asayish announced a state an emergency in the city, and a 48-hour curfew starting Sunday morning.

The SDF reached the Syrian-Iraqi border after clashes with ISIS in Southern al-Hasakah, Northeastern Syria.

Activists reported that the SDF and Iraqi forces, including the 29th brigade of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces militia, clashed with ISIS. The SDF gained control of the Tal Safuk border crossing. There were no reports of casualties.

Local activists reported that the Syrian government forces and Russian forces opened reconciliation centers in several cities and towns in the Deir ez-Zor governorate, Eastern Syria.

The activists added that the executives of the reconciliation centers are communicating with locals to join the National Defense militia and sign reconciliation agreements.

Anonymous armed persons attacked the Sham Hospital near the city of Kafr Nubl, 35 kilometers south of Idlib, Northern Syria. The armed persons withdraw after two of them were injured in clashes with the hospital guards.

The General Commission of the Syrian Revolution in the city of Aleppo, Northern Syria, elected 20 members for its sixth term. The election was supervised by the Free Aleppo governorate council.

The General Commission said in a statement that 71 out of 91 members participated in the election; 35 members of them participated directly in the al-Kahraba Association and 36 members participated via the WhatsApp application. The commission added that 22 members were elected.

In Central Syria, the Syrian government tricked men in Northern Homs into joining the government forces by telling young men to come to administration centers and apply for identity cards.

Local sources reported that employees in the center for issuing identity cards requested the young men to obtain conscription statements from the conscription department. The men were brought directly to Syrian government military bases instead.
