Russian airstrikes kill and injure civilians in Idlib; Washington sanctions oil companies for dealing with Syrian government

Local and field updates:

On Friday, suspected Russian airstrikes killed and civilian and injured ten others in the village of al-Habit, Southern Idlib in Northern Syria. Suspected Syrian government warplanes bombed the village of Tal’as. The bombings occurred in before demonstrations in the Idlib governorate, Northern Syria.

On Thursday, the opposition faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)  arrested a prominent Islamic State (IS) commander in Western Aleppo, Northern Syria. HTS media outlets reported that the commander is called Abu Asim al-Rfi, the IS’ official of relations in Hama.

The Kurdish People's Protection Units said that their fighters killed and injured four Free Syrian Army (FSA) fighters in a bomb attack in the village of Dikimdash in  Afrin area, Northern Aleppo in Northern Syria.

Protesters in the city of Azaz in Aleppo refused to recognize elections, which Turkey supervised to elect a new local council. The protesters said that the elections are a maneuver against their demands to dissolve the old local council, especially as a wide range of the former council members participated in the election.

The Initial Response Team (IRT) belonging to the al-Raqqa Civil Council removed nine bodies from beneath the rubble in al-Raqqa.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) arrested five workers during a curfew, which the SDF impose in al-Raqqa. The SDF arrested 25 youths in the city of al-Tabaqa and towns of al-Mansoura and al-Salhabia in Western al-Raqqa, for compulsory recruitment.

The Syrian government forces arrested four youths from the village of Housh Arab in the Rif Dimashq for compulsory and reservist recruitment.

The Women’s Affairs Committee in the city of Idlib held a conference to reactivate the roles’ of former women prisoners in the Syrian government forces’ prisons, in the Syrian Revolution.

University dropout students in the city of Afrin formed a committee to communicate with Turkey. The students demand Turkey open a university in the area so that the students can continue their education.  

Political and international updates:

The United State (US) Department of Treasury imposed sanctions on individuals, networks, and companies for facilitating oil transportation to the Syrian government. The penalties included Muhammad al-Qaterji and his company, which supervised oil bargains between the IS and the Syrian government. The sanctions also included five fuel companies in Lebanon, Syria, and the United Arab Emirates.  

The US Special Envoy to Syria Jeams Jeffery stated that Washington could see much evidence that the Syrian government prepares a chemical attack against Idlib.

The Sweden Ambassador to the United Nations Olof Skoog stated that eight European countries support Turkey’ efforts to save Idlib a potential humanitarian disaster.
