HTS supports fighting Kurdistan Worker Party in Syria, and FSA refuses to work with HTS

Local and field updates:

On Monday, the commander of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), who is called Abu Muhammad al-Jawlani, stated that the HTS supports regaining control of the areas controlled by the Kurdistan Worker Party (PKK) in Syria.

Al-Jawlani added that the military factions operating in areas outside of the Syrian government forces control should be separated from civil administration.

The Free Syrian Army (FSA) stated that the HTS is a terrorist organization and it cannot be merged into the National Army. The FSA delivered its statements in commenting on a statement by Al-Jawlani on the need to unify all the factions in one entity.

On Monday, HTS confiscated medical and servicing equipment from the dispensary of the town of Jarjanaz, southern Idlib, Northern Syria.

The HTS promised not to prosecute the Ahrar al-Sham Islamist Movement’ fighters in HTS- controlled areas in northern Hama, Central Syria. The HTS called the fighters not to leave the area.

The Salvation Government operating in HTS areas intends to provide power from areas in northern Hama to areas in Idlib.

On Monday, a landmine explosion killed a fighter of the FSA’ Asifit al-Shamal Brigade and injured two others in the village of Kafr Khasher in the Azaz area near Aleppo, Northern Syria.

The FSA National Liberation Front repelled a Syrian government forces’ infiltration attempt, west of Aleppo, amidst a Syrian government forces artillery shelling on the area.

The Initial Response Team (IRT) of the al-Raqqa Civil Council has retrieved 3,310 bodies in the al-Raqqa governorate, Northeastern Syria, since September 2018.

On Monday, the Turkish Border Guards (Jandarma) injured a civilian in the Amouda area in the al-Hasakah governorate, Northeastern Syria.

Ten young men escaped areas controlled by the Syrian government forces in the Deir al-Zor governorate, Eastern Syria, to areas controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) fearing of arrest by the Syrian government forces.  

On Sunday night and Monday morning, unknown people ripped apart a photo of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the city of Dail, 16 kilometers north of Daraa, Southern Syria. Also in Dail, the Syrian government forces arrested two young men for compulsory military service.

Political and international updates:

On Monday, Fakher al-Din Alton, the chief of the Turkish presidency communication administration stated Turkey protects the Kurds, it is not their enemy, and it has no problems with them.  

On Monday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu stated that Turkey does not initially oppose the United States’ (US) suggestion to establish a safe-zone in Northeastern Syria.

On Monday, the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo emphasized that the aim of the  US suggestion of a safe zone in Northeastern Syria is to prevent the attacks against Turkey from Syria and protect the forces that fought the Islamic State in reference for the SDF.

On Monday, the Qatari Foreign Minister Muhammad Bin Abdulrahman al-Thani stated that the normalization of ties with the Syrian government at this stage is the only normalization with a person who is involved in war crimes.
