Aleppo - SMART
On Wednesday, clashes between the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and National Liberation Front (NLF) injured civilians in the village of Khan al-Asal, 10 kilometers west of Aleppo, Northern Syria.
The HTS is an Islamist opposition faction previously known as the al-Nusra Front, consisting of fighting groups including the Haqq Brigade, Jabhat Ansar al-Din, and Jaysh al-Sunnah.
The NLF is an opposition group formed by the two Sunni Islamist groups Ahrar al-Sham and the Nour al-Din al-Zenki Movement. The Hayat Tahrir al-Sham is the main rival of the NLF in Northwestern Syria.
Local activists reported that intermittent clashes using light, medium, and heavy weapons erupted between both sides, injuring three civilians who were transported to a hospital in the village of Hoor.
The activists noted that the road between the town of Urum al-Kubra and Khan al-'Asal is blocked due to the clashes. The Nour al-Din al-Zenki Movement of the NLF sent reinforcements to its checkpoint on a crossroads near the village of 'Owaijil.
The activists added that clashes erupted between the HTS and the al-Zenki fighters on the perimeter of the al-Ashrafiya neighborhood in the city of Darat Izzah, Western Aleppo, in an attempt by the HTS to seize the neighborhood.
On Tuesday, the HTS seized the al-Sheikh Barakat mountain near Darat Izzah. The HTS also seized a western neighborhood in Darat Izzah and launched an arrest campaign.
Earlier on Tuesday, battles re-erupted between the HTS and al-Zenki fighters in Western Aleppo. The HTS attacked al-Zenki outposts in Darat Izzah from the direction of the villages of Taqad, Khan al-Asal, and Tirmanin, killing and injuring fighters on both sides and civilians.
Days ago, a dispute emerged between the factions on the background of the killing of four HTS fighters by al-Zenki fighters in the village of Tal 'Ada in the adjacent Idlib governorate. After the incident, both sides reached an agreement to settle the dispute; however, the HTS attacked al-Zenki outposts in Western Aleppo, accusing al-Zenki of violating the agreement.
