Aleppo - SMART

The local council in Al-Bab, which is 40 km east of Aleppo, Northern Syria, restored 60 percent of the new HAL market.

The head of the council's legal office, Mohammad Fares, told SMART that the council restored 150 out of 275 stores in the market, as well as the fences and squares. The  work to restore the rest continues.

He referred to the cancellation of contracts with traders after the Islamic State gained control of the city. The council signed new contracts, with a monthly rent of 25 to 50 USD.

A market trader told SMART that the traders and the local council negotiated to receive the shops. However, the Islamic State was forcing the traders to pay fees.

In April, the Al-Bab general leadership announced that it considers the new Hal Market a major market for the city and its countryside instead of the old market, which the general leadership decided to close.
