Homs - SMART

On Saturday, the first chess tournament for people with special needs was held in the area of Al-Houla, Homs, Central Syria.

The Sports and Youth Sub-Committee's special sports official, Wissam Al-Awaid, told SMART that the tournament is the first step to revitalize activities for people with special needs. He added that the committee has difficulties in securing financial support for such activities.

Al-Awaid pointed out that the committee established a championship in tennis, table tennis, chess and marathon. It also established the classification league and the Martyrs Cup in football.

In September, the Sports and Youth Sub-Commission organized the first chess tournament with 28 players in the city of Al-Rastan, which is 22 km north of Homs.

In the past months, the governorates beyond regime control held many events and championships in an attempt to returning sports activities after years of bombing from loyalist forces.
