Daraa - SMART

On Wednesday, the Irrigation Directorate, Water Resources and the Daraa Governorate Council prevented the digging of random wells due to decreasing the groundwater level in the Southern region.

The Governorate Council asked the diggers to give it  their excavators' license. The council also asked the diggers to not move their excavators except by its or the nearest police station order.

The Governor Deputy of Daraa, Emad Al-Bateen, pointed out that digging wells will be only after deep geological studies proving its potential for investment. He noted that the studies have indicated that the region cannot stand new random drilling operations.

Al-Bateen indicated that they started a census of random irregularities to regularize their situation. He stressed that they will cooperate with the Justice Court in Daraa to prevent digging random wells to preserve the water stock.

Digging random wells has spread throughout Syria, such as Al-Hawla in Northern Homs during the summer. It has also spread in rural towns and villages of Southern Idlib, which threatens the region's groundwater level. The local councils cannot prevent people from digging new wells.
