Turkey - SMART

Hundreds of families were displaced from the villages and towns of Eastern Deir Al-zor, controlled by the Islamic State, to another controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (Qusd), as a result of intense artillery bombardment by Syrian and Russian forces.

Activists from Deir Al-Zour province demanded the evacuation of villages and towns adjacent to the city of Mayadeen (45 km east of Deir al-Azur), because of the fear of reprisals by the loyalist forces.

On Monday, activists posted a video clip showing hundreds of families and civilians vehicles fleeing to the areas controlled by Qusd.

The activists pointed out that the loyalist forces sent military reinforcements, floating bridges and riverboats to the city of Al-Mayaden, in preparation for the crossing of the Euphrates River to the eastern bank (the island line) in an attempt to reach the oil field.

The “Al-Omar “oil field is one of the largest oil fields in Syria, producing about 30 thousand barrels on a daily basis and includes a gas plant and a power plant. In Nov, the Nasra Front had control of the field; however, the IS later took control of it.

The military campaign of the Syrian and Russian forces in Deir Al-Zour has targeted homes, towns, and river crossings, resulting in the displacement of about 400,000 civilians, in addition to the killing and wounding of hundreds of civilians, amid calls by civil bodies and activists to open safe corridors for civilians.
