Syrian Democratic Forces: “We are ready to enter the city of Albuqmal if the loyalist forces fail”

Deir al-Zour - SMART

On Friday, the Deir al-Zour Military Council of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced their readiness to enter the city of Albuqmal, 120 km east of Deir al-Zour. The council aims to restore the city from the Islamic State if the loyalist forces fail to restore it.

A member of the media office of the Deir al-Zour Council, Bassem Aziz, told SMART that if they gain control of the Shaitat area, they will enter the city of Albuqmal.

Aziz pointed out that their members continue fighting with ISIS to gain control Shaitat, after they gained control of the villages of Dhiban, Tayan, and Shanan east of the Euphrates River.

Aziz noted that the fighting killed 32 ISIS members, destroyed three car bombs, and dismantled a booby-trap. He also pointed to the killing of a number of the council’s members.

SDF gained control of the village of Abu Hamam after clashes with ISIS; SDF are now 40 km from the city of Albuqamal.

SDF try to reach the city of Albuqmal on the Iraqi border after a spokesman for the US-led International Coalition said that the city of Albuqmal is a goal for the international coalition. Furthermore, loyalist forces, with support of Russian warplanes, seek to gain control the city of Albuqmal after they gaining control of the city of Al-Mayadeen.
