Turkey - SMART

On Tuesday, the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reiterated during a speech in Ankara his country's intention to complete the Euphrates Shield Operation to gain control of the Manbaj and Afrin areas, which are currently controlled by the Kurdish People's Protection Units in Aleppo, Northern Syria.

Erdogan said that the Euphrates Shield Operation, which was launched in August last year, will be completed in the two regions, without specifying a timeframe, according to the news agency Anatolia.

Turkey, in cooperation with factions of the Free Syrian Army, launched the Euphrates Shield Operation in August 2016. The operation lasted for months, during which Turkey gained control of the strategic city of Al Bab east of Aleppo and large areas of the Syrian-Turkish border after the expulsion of the Islamic State.

Turkey has repeatedly threatened to launch an attack on the Afrin region. The Turkish  Defense Minister said that the operation against the Kurdish Units may be soon.

The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in previous statements that his country should purge the city of Afrin from the Kurdish Units, and he doesn’t rule out contacting the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
