Idlib - SMART

The Salvation Government has announced the formation of a new Emergency Response Committee for the displaced persons in Idlib, Northern Syria, after a request from the Ministry of Social Affairs and Displaced Persons, which is part of the Salvation Government.

On Tuesday, the Salvation Government said in a statement that it appointed the Minister of Social Affairs and Displaced Persons as Chairman of the Committee, and the Minister of Housing and Reconstruction as a member of it. It also appointed representatives of the Ministries of Education, Higher Education, Health, Endowments, Economy, Local Administration and Services, Agriculture and Interior.

The Government explained that the Committee’s tasks are providing the needs of displaced persons, developing action plans according to the emergency situation and being in a state of permanent alert until further notice.

The number of displaced persons from the countrysides of Eastern and Southern Idlib and Northern and Eastern Hama has reached about 25,900 families, of whom more than 131,230 are displaced persons, including about 80,000 women and 34,000 children. The process of documenting the displaced persons continues, according to the Ministry of Social Affairs and Displaced Persons.

The Red Crescent Communications Manager, Ahmad Al-Ahmad, said that the total number of families that have arrived in the region so far is about 12,700, including about 80,000 displaced persons, most of them women and children.

The increase in displaced persons comes as a result of clashes in the region that have been ongoing since early 2017. The clashes are happening between the factions of the Free Syrian Army and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham on one hand and the loyalist forces on the other. Also, clashes are taking place between the factions of the Free Syrian Army and the Islamic State in the same area after ISIS advanced in the Eastern countryside of Hama and towns and villages under the loyalist forces' control.
