Turkey - SMART

On Wednesday, four members of the Islamic State, including two women, blew themselves up with explosive belts near a checkpoint controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Eastern Deir ez-Zor, Northeastern Syria.

Activists told SMART that the four members blew themselves up on Tuesday, near an SDF defense checkpoint in the village of Tayyib al-Fal, 33 km east of Deir ez-Zor. The members were trying to escape when they blew themselves up. Activists said that the suicide bombers were from the Syrian Desert.

The activists added that a woman with two children had accompanied the four IS members. The woman surrendered herself and the children to the SDF, but she would not give the reason behind the attack.

On Tuesday, the SDF launched a search in the town of al-Shuhail, 37 km east of Deir ez-Zor, looking for IS weapon stores.

In December, a number of civilians, including four children, were killed when a car bomb exploded in the town of al-Shuhail. The attack targeted an SDF roadblock at al-Attal roundabout in the town.
