Idlib, SMART

On Thursday, factions of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and Islamist battalions regained control of Abu al-Duhur military airbase in Eastern Idlib, Northern Syria, hours after loyalist forces had advanced into it.

An anonymous military source said that the opposition factions launched a counterattack against the loyalist forces inside the airbase and regained control of it at dawn. The loyalist forces had entered the airbase on Wednesday evening.

The source added that a prominent commander of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham was killed during the clashes. The source refused to state the name of the commander.

Local activists posted a video on social media showing suspected Russian warplanes bombing the airbase and its vicinity with napalm missiles, which are illegal under international law.

Loyalist forces supported by Russian air forces have launched a military campaign against Eastern Idlib, killing and injuring dozens of civilians while destroying major institutions and infrastructure. The campaign has also displaced thousands of civilians. During the campaign, loyalist forces have gained control of dozens of villages in the area.
