Idlib - SMART

The Syrian loyalist forces and its pro-government militias have gained control of the Abu al-Duhur military airport, 48 km east of Idlib, Northern Syria, after clashes with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and the Free Syrian Army.

Local activists told SMART that the loyalist forces and its militias, with the support of the warplanes and helicopters of the government and Russia, have been trying to storm the airport for three days. They targeted the airport with hundreds of raids and explosive barrels, some of them with the toxic chlorine. Therefore, the HTS and the FSA factions were forced to withdraw from it.

The activists added that the clashes are still continuing in the vicinity of the airport. They pointed out that the clashes have resulted in dead and wounded on both sides.

The General Command of the loyalist forces announced in a statement their control over the entire airport. It noted that the engineering teams are still working to disarm the mines spread around the airport. The airport is important strategically, being the second largest military base in Syria.

On Jan. 11, factions of the FSA and Islamist Battalions regained control of the Abu al-Duhur airport hours after the loyalist forces advanced.
