Turkey - SMART

A chief commander in the Free Syrian Army has stated that the FSA does not aim to gain control over Afrin, Northern Syria, and they only aim to repel the Syrian Democratic Forces, in which the Kurdish People’s Protection Units are the main component.

The chief commander, Ahmed Othman, added, “We know that the majority of people in Afrin are Kurdish, as well as Arab and Turkmen. This does not mean that the Kurds are our enemy; they are our people, and our goal is to repel the SDF from the area and regain control over the villages they took, not gain control over Afrin.”

Othman preferred not to mention the number of FSA fighters in the battle against the SDF. He only said that their number is enough to gain control over the area.

Factions from the Free Syrian Army and Turkish Army have launched a military ground attack, named the Olive Branch operation, in Rajo, Northwestern Afrin, starting from their bases in Turkey.

Hours after launching the battle, the FSA gained control over several villages and hills in Afrin, after clashes with SDF fighters, coinciding with crossfire between the two parties, in addition to raids launched by Turkish warplanes on YPG bases.
