Turkey - SMART

On Monday, factions of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) withdraw from the strategic Barsaya mountain top after clashes with the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG). Earlier, the FSA factions gained control of the mountain top for hours after the launch of a military operation from Azaz, Northern Aleppo, to the Afrin area.

In a statement obtained by SMART, the military spokesman of the FSA's Third Legion, Mohammad Hamadin, said that they withdrew from the mountain top after a retaliation attack by the YPG, affirming that they will continue to fight to reclaim the mountain.

Hamadin added that they killed five YPG fighters and detained ten others during the clashes, in addition to gaining several light weapons and DShk heavy machine guns, as two FSA fighters were killed and others injured.

The Barsaya mountain lies to the east of Azaz, and has a wide view of areas. It was the base of the YPG artillery that bombed the towns of Northern Aleppo.

Earlier, the FSA gained control of essential villages and hills in the Afrin area as part of the first military ground attack of the Olive Branch operation that the Turkish Chief of the General Staff announced last Saturday.
