Turkey - SMART

The United Nations Security Council concludes the emergency meeting called for by France to discuss the latest developments in the Afrin area, Aleppo, Northern Syria, without a condemnation or a joint declaration on the Afrin battle.

France called for a Security Council meeting after the Turkish Chief of the General Staff announced the launch of the Olive Branch military operation in the Afrin area against the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) on Jan. 20, 2018. The YPG is the main component of the Syrian Democratic Forces supported by the USA, operating in Northern and Northeastern Syria.

During the meeting held on Monday and Tuesday, the Permanent Representative of France to the UN, Francois Delattre, said that France is "deeply concerned" about the military operation and escalation in Northern Syria. He called on Turkey to maintain self-control, pointing out that all members of the Council share his call.

Delattre considered Afrin one element of the Syrian issue, pointing out that the priority for the allies is fighting the Islamic State.

Representatives of the influential members of the Security Council did not give any statements after the consultations, which the United Stations Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, did not attend, according to AFP.

During the same meeting, Delattre warned that Eastern Ghouta in the Damascus countryside could turn into another Aleppo, in reference to the war crimes committed in the city. Delattre holds the loyalist forces responsible for the situation in Ghouta.

The Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, accused France of siding with the YPG, after France called for an emergency meeting of the Security Council to discuss the developments in Eastern Ghouta, the Idlib province and the Afrin area in Northern Aleppo.

On Sunday, the US called on Turkey to maintain self-control, limit its military operations in the Afrin area and maintain the safety of civilians.
