Daraa - SMART

On Tuesday, loyalist forces revoked their threat to bomb al-Sanamin, 50 km north of Daraa, Southern Syria, after the Free Syrian Army (FSA) refused to hand over a loyalist officer, whom the FSA kidnapped on the way to the city days ago.

On Sunday, loyalist forces threatened to bomb al-Sanamin if its residents did not evacuate within 48 hours, which ended this morning. Loyalist forces threatened to fight FSA factions in case of a military escalation. Constant security tension has dominated the city after loyalist forces arrested some of the residents of al-Sanamin.

Activists circulated a statement by the loyalist forces, which the mosques of al-Sanamin broadcasted from their loud speakers. The statement said that the Ninth Division of the loyalist forces revoke their threats, and that the residents no longer need to evacuate the city. The statement added that the decision came after the mediation of good people and instructions from supreme authorities.

The Ninth Division of the loyalist forces added that they gave the honest people of al-Sanamin enough time, provided that the kidnappers release the loyalist officer as soon as possible and not to kidnap any loyalist member in the future. The Ninth Division called upon residents of al-Sanamin to fully cooperate with the members of the armed forces, according to the statement.

Maher Abu al-Lail, commander of al-Fajr Brigade of the FSA, which operates in al-Sanamin, told SMART that the loyalist forces’ revoking of the threats is a triumph of the factions in Houran, which united against the Syrian government. The government has never revoked its decisions before. Abu al-Lail added that the factions should retain their unified position, and they are ready for any developments that could lead to confrontation with the loyalist forces.

The media office of al-Sanamin Operations Room said in a statement on Facebook that the loyalist forces’ revoking of their threats to bomb the city and demand to return the kidnapped officer within a specific timeframe came after the FSA factions raised the alarm and formed a special military operations rooms in al-Sanamin.

FSA factions control the residential neighborhoods of al-Sanamin, while the loyalist forces control the highway and official institutions, amidst contradicted news about reconciliation in the city since late December 2016.
