Al-Hasakah - SMART

The Kurdish National Council, which is affiliated with the Syrian National Coalition, organized two protests in al-Qamishli and Amuda, al-Hasakah, Northeastern Syria, condemning the Turkish military operation in Afrin, Aleppo, Northern Syria.

One hundred protesters participated in Amouda. They raised signs saying “we condemn the Turkish aggression on Afrin,” and “we deplore the participation of the so-called Syrian National Army in the offensive on Afrin.”

Five hundred people protested in al-Qamishli. One of the protesters, Even Hajo, appealed to the United Nations to intervene and end the Turkish military operation, to protect civilians and unify all Syrians.

A member of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) in Syria, Muhsen Taher, said that Turkey should start protecting their borders by resolving the Kurdish crisis peacefully, starting from Diyar Bakr. He also said that the Turkish military operation in Afrin will allow the incursion of terrorist groups in the area, and will ruin the lives of millions living in what are currently safe areas.

The protest was the first protest of the Kurdish National Council to condemn the Turkish operation, and it followed two days after the Council published a statement calling for a protest in condemnation of the National Coalition and its support of the operation. The Council also called upon Turkey to withdraw and end the operation.

Turkey, along with the Free Syrian Army, launched the Olive Branch operation against the Kurdish People’s Protection Units in Afrin eight days ago.

The National Coalition said earlier, “The Kurdish Council has a different position on the Afrin operation compared to the Coalition’s. It is either because of their connection with the Kurdish people, or because of tactical considerations. The Coalition views the PYD’s actions as terrorist actions while seeking to diminish Syria’s unity.”
