Turkey - SMART

On Wednesday, the United Nations report that the Kurdish Autonomous Administration and the Syrian government have been preventing the people of Afrin, Northern Aleppo, Northern Syria, from fleeing the region.

The United Nations said in a report published on their official website that “the local authorities in Afrin continues to prevent its people from fleeing the region, and the loyalist forces prevented them from crossing the checkpoint into the town of Nabel.”

About 15 thousand people have been internally displaced from their villages in Afrin, which are exposed to shelling and battles. The villagers have fled to the city of Afrin and other relatively safe villages.

A few days ago, bus drivers told SMART that the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have detained 200 displaced persons from Idlib at the Qatma checkpoint in the Afrin area for four days, preventing them from crossing into the town of Azaz.

According to local sources in Afrin the loyalist forces in the towns of Nabel and Zahra prevent the displaced persons from going to the city of Aleppo. In order to cross they must provide the loyalist forces with money and a sponsor from Aleppo.

The region has been witnessing battles between the Turkish Army and the Free Syrian Army on one side, and the Syrian Democratic Forces, whose main component is the Kurdish People's Protection Units, on the other side. The battles have been ongoing for 12 days.
