Turkey - SMART

The French President Emmanuel McCron warned Turkey that its military operation in the Afrin region of Aleppo, Northern Syria, will be "an excuse to invade the country." He also called on Turkey to coordinate its moves in the area with its allies.

McCrone said in an interview with Le Figaro newspaper published on Wednesday, “If this operation takes another approach of fighting the potential threat of terrorism on the Turkish border and turns into an invasion, this will be a real problem for us.”

The French President added that he would raise the issue again with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He said, "The nature of the operation means the need for discussions between the Europeans and allies."

Turkey considers the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), which controls the Afrin region, a terrorist organization and an extension of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) that fights it on its territory. France participated in training and arming the YPG in its battles against the Islamic State in Syria.

On Jan. 20, the Turkish Army and factions of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) launched a ground attack as part of the Olive Branch Operation in the area of Afrin, which is controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), of which the YPG is the main component. They have gained control of several villages and hills since the launch of the operation, during the ongoing clashes.
