Aleppo - SMART

On Saturday, a Turkish helicopter crashed, killing its pilots while flying over the village Quda of Nahiyat Raju, 25 km northwest of Afrin, Northern Syria.

The Turkish Prime Minister, Ben Ali Yildirim, said that the two pilots were killed after the helicopter crash, without mentioning the causes for the fall. The helicopter was doing its military mission during the Olive Branch Operation in Afrin. Yildirim pointed out that they have no evidence of external interference in the fall of the aircraft.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), of which the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) is the most prominent component, took over the fallen aircraft in the village of Quda, and broadcasted a video of the fall.

On Jan. 21, the Turkish Army and factions of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) launched the first military ground attack as part of SDF's Olive Branch Operation in Afrin. During the operation, the FSA and the Turkish Army gained control of the town of Bulbul and several villages and hills in the region.
