Idlib - SMART

On Monday, members of the Islamic State (ISIS) seize al-Khoain village in Maarrat al-Nu'man, 38 kilometers south of Idlib, Northern Syria, following battles with the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and affiliated Islamist battalions. Members of ISIS advanced to the town of al-Tamaniah after seizing al-Khoain.

Local activists said that gaining control of al-Khoain followed clashes and ISIS attempts to infiltrate to the area since last night. The activists noted that there were no reports of casualties on any side.

Activists pointed out that loyalist forces fired on al-Khoain during the clashes from nearby artillery outposts.

The activists added that FSA and Islamist battalions clashed with ISIS members in the village of Um al-Zarzour in the same area. Neither side gained control of the village.

ISIS' advance towards the village follows the loyalist forces' recent opening of routes in favor of ISIS, to let them in to the areas controlled by the FSA and Islamist battalions in Southern Idlib. Loyalist forces fabricated reports of battles with ISIS in which the latter managed to advance from Hama after gaining control of several villages.

Earlier today, Islamist battalions captured a group of ISIS members while attempting to infiltrate al-Khoain village in the Maarrat al-Nu'man district.
