Homs - SMART

On Tuesday, furious protesters expel Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) from the city of al-Rastan, 20 kilometers north of Homs, Central Syria, after HTS members killed a civilian and admitted to the crime.

HTS members killed the civilian Fayez al-Madani after accusing him of communicating with the loyalist forces. Al-Madani used to work as a pilot before he became a member of the negotiation committee in charge of supplying al-Rastan with electricity through the “400 line".

Members of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) protected the protesters while they headed to the HTS headquarters at the edges of al-Rastan to expel the HTS members. The protestors handed the headquarters over to the Rijal Allah (Men of God) brigade, which is part of the FSA.

On Dec. 12, 2017, civilians in al-Rastan protested against the High Legislative Court and demanded that the court leave the city. The protests followed a call by the Revolutionist Leadership council in al-Rastan against what the council called the abuses of the High Legislative Court.

HTS members have committed violations against civilians and opponents previously. The most recent of these violations was in the city of Binnish in Idlib, where HTS members killed Hussam Hourani during an arrest campaign against civilians and activists on Feb. 3, 2018. The activists and civilians had been protesting against HTS the previous day.
