Idlib, SMART

On Tuesday, Free Syrian Army (FSA) factions and Islamist affiliated battalions of the Repel the Aggressors Operations Room as well as the al-Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham eradicated the Islamic State (ISIS) in Southeastern Idlib, Northern Syria and captured hundreds of ISIS members.

The Operations Room said in a statement seen by SMART that the factions and battalions managed to kill and injure dozens of ISIS members and capture hundreds following fierce clashes, which lasted over than three days in al-Khoain, Southeastern Idlib.

On Monday, ISIS seized the village of al-Khoain in Maarrat al-Nu’man District,38 kilometers south of Idlib, following battles with FSA factions and Islamist affiliated battalions.Seizing al-Khoain allowed  ISIS to advance towards the town of al-Tamaniah.

The statement said that the factions would treat ISIS captures according to justice, law, and security necessities. The report added that the operations room would reveal the truth of cooperation and coordination between ISIS and Syrian Government and its supporters.

Hussam Salamah, a commander of the al-Ahrar-al-Sham Islamist Movement, operating in the operations room, told SMART that the number of ISIS captures 400 members, who surrendered with their light and medium weapons. Salama added that some of the captures were of foreign nationalities without specifying them, as well as families with little percent.

Salamah confirmed that the members surrendered within an agreement of surrender and under the condition of sustaining their safety alone. Salamah added that the deal does not include, ISIS top criminals, and he refused to reveal the names of the most significant ISIS leaders, who were captured.

ISIS' advance towards Southeastern Idlib follows the loyalist forces' recent opening of routes in favor of ISIS, to let them into the areas controlled by the FSA and Islamist battalions in Southern Idlib. Loyalist forces fabricated reports of battles with ISIS in which the latter managed to advance from Hama after gaining control of several villages.

The factions and battalions of the operations room said that ISIS entered Southeastern Idlib by cooperation and coordination with loyalist forces, which transported ISIS members through the areas under Syrian government's control towards al-Khoain to fight the opposition’s factions.

The statement added that loyalist forces had already transported large groups of ISIS from Uqayribat District in Hama through the areas controlled by loyalist forces towards Idlib Eastern countryside. Loyalist forces also carried ISIS groups, which escaped from Raqqa and Deir Ez-Zor to fight in favor of loyalist forces in Northern Hama and Eastern Idlib countrysides. Those ISIS groups handed over the areas they used to control to loyalist forces after completing their mission.

The al-Hayat Tahrir -al-Sham(HTS) delivered a statement in which it confirmed ISIS members were surrendering. The statement noted that the factions transported the captured members to prisons to investigate and submit them to jurisdiction. At the same time, HTS pointed out that its security campaign will continue to chase the rest of ISIS groups until eradicating them.

In late December 2017, loyalist forces gained control over strategic villages and hills in Idlib, which included in the de-escalation agreement, after advancing from Hama countryside. Loyalist forces advance coincided with ISIS intensified military operations towards Idlib, during which ISIS gained control of villages and hills controlled by HTS and FSA in Eastern Hama.

In their statement, the factions and battalions called upon the international community to hasten judging Syrian government for coordinating with ISIS and supporting terrorism.

Earlier, Colonel Fateh Hasoun, a member of the factions’ delegation to Astana, said that the Russian delegation to Astana admitted the collusion between Syrian government and ISIS in Eastern Hama and promised to investigate the matter.
