Turkey - SMART

The official Anatolia news agency reported an American intelligence report on Wednesday that the Kurdish People's Protection Unit (YPG) is part of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and is seeking to establish an independent region in Syria. The YPG is an armed force of Kurdish fighters of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party. Its establishment was discovered in 2012, one year after the Syrian Revolution began.

The agency said that the Director of American National Intelligence, Dania Coates, presented a report to the US Senate, stating that "The YPG is part of the PKK ... It will probably seek to establish an independent region in Syria and will face resistance from Turkey, Russia, and Iran."

The PKK is classified as a "terrorist organization" on UN regulations, while the United States supports the YPG in Syria and supplies them with weapons to counter the Islamic state, which worries Turkey that classifies YPG as "terrorist" as well.

The Turkish Army and the Free Syrian Army (FSA) have launched a military operation, named Olive Branch, against the YPG since Jan. 20 in Afrin, Northern Syria.
