Al Hasakah - SMART

The cumin cultivation in the Amuda area, 68 kilometers north of Al Hasakah, Northeastern Syria, declines due to the decrease in farmed land area by 80 percent compared to last year's. The city of cultivated land decreased due to the severe weather conditions, which harmed previous year's crops.

A farmer from the Amuda countryside, Hakim, said that he planted about 700 acres last year, but he suffered a loss due to a late rain that harmed the crops, pointing out that he reduced the area he planted this year to a 100 acres only.

Another farmer from the Al Darbasiyah countryside, Omran Husain Al Eid, said that he planted about 800 acres last year, but only 60 acres this year due to the loss he suffered, saying that last season, every acre cost him 11,000 SYP.

A cumin merchant, Ali Bekko, said that the prices are affected by the exchange rate of the U.SDollar because the merchants by the cumin crops with Syrian Pounds and sell them with US Dollars. The Dollar's exchange rate at the beginning of the season was 537 SYP but now dropped to 460 SYP.

Bekko added that the crops were doing good at the beginning of last season, but heavy rain in April harmed the sensitive cumin crops. Bekko also said that the price of one ton of premium cumin is recent $ 2700.

Farmers of the Amuda countryside complain about the insufficient amounts of fuel distributed to them by the Rojova's city council of Amuda, forcing them to waterless areas of their farmed lands.

The Rojova, led by the Kurdish Democratic Union party, the PYD, controls vast areas of Northern and Northeastern Syria, spreading between Al Hasakah in the east to the town of Manbij, Aleppo, in the west, in addition to the Afrin area in the Northern Aleppo countryside.
