Turkey, SMART

On Friday, Turkey called upon the United States to transport the Kurdish People’s Protection Units(YPG) from Manbij,82 kilometers east of Aleppo, Northern Syria to Eastern Euphrates. The USA replied that Washington understands Ankara’s concerns.

Mevlut Cavic Oglu, the Turkish foreign minister, said in a joint press conference with his US counterpart, Rex Tillerson," we must make sure that YPG moves to Eastern Euphrates, because achieving stability in Manbij depends on the part, which will manage and secure the city as 95 percent of Manbij population are Arabs and YPG managing Manbij and sustaining security will never achieve stability."

Oglu added that cooperation with Washington would prioritize Manbij concerning Syria. Oglu said that Washington promised to drive the Kurdish Units (YPG) outside of Manbij.

Tillerson said that the United States understands Turkey’s concerns about Manbij and other areas on the borders, and hence Washington prioritized this case in the work teams formed to handle controversial issues and coordinate efforts to come up with a stable and unified Syria.

Tillerson added that Washington would work with Turkey to ensure that Manbij remains under the control of Washington-allied troops and to make sure that Islamic State will not to return to the city again.

Tillerson noted that the situation in Syria is still dangerous and there is much to be done through the proper work plan, which Turkey and USA agreed upon.

Earlier today, Reuters News agency quoted a Turkish official saying that Turkey suggested that the Kurdish Units, which control Manbij, withdraw to the areas under their control in Eastern Euphrates for Turkish and US troops centralize in Manbij.

This agreement comes 26 days after the Turkish Army and factions of the Free Syrian Army(FSA) launched a ground attack as a part of a military operation under the name of Olive Branch in Afrin area controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces(SDF)of which the  Kurdish Units form the central part.

Politicians and analysts say that the USA, Russia, and Turkey share their agreement that the SDF, of which the Kurdish Units form the central part remains in Eastern Euphrates under the protection of US military bases as the area is considered the richest in Syria of oil and water for agricultural production. Russian-supported loyalist forces control the Western Euphrates. Turkish -supported FSA factions monitor the area from Northern Aleppo countryside to the western Euphrates bank along the Turkish borders
