Homs - SMART

The proportion of workers in the agriculture sector in the Northern Homs countryside, Central Syria, has exceeded 80 percent due to the siege and people's reliance on yields.

On Sunday, the financial director of the agricultural company Oussama Obeid told SMART that the agricultural sector offers job opportunities for both men and women, but the percentage of workers in this field has increased due to the lack of other job opportunities and the high number of killed, detained and forcibly disappeared men.

Obeid added that the lack of rainfall has affected the agriculture negatively, as the people rely on rain fed agriculture.

Most people living in al-Taybah al-Gharbiah in the al-Hola area, 35 kilometers north of Homs, rely on agriculture to make a living, despite its high prices and the lack of job opportunities.

Several difficulties face farmers in the Northern Homs countryside, amidst severely low rainfall, which is the most important means of watering.
