Turkey - SMART

On Sunday, American officials said that the United States has ruled out Turkey's use of using toxic gas during attacks on the Afrin region north of Aleppo, Northern Syria.

This came after the Kurdish Red Crescent announced yesterday that a chemical attack was launched on the area of Afrin, injuring six people by suffocation, according to a doctor at the hospital of Afrin.

The Russian news agency Novosti quoted a spokesman for the US administration, Michael Anton, saying that "the White House is aware of Syria's accusations against Turkey of using chemical weapons in Afrin, but these reports cannot be confirmed." Anton ruled out the possibility of Turkey's use of toxic gases.

The Associated Press news agency quoted a White House official, who preferred not to be identified, saying that he saw reports on the Turkish Army's usage of chemical weapons in Afrin posted in social media. He added that despite this, his country has no evidence to prove it.

In the same context, one of the officials of the National Security Council in the White House told the Turkish news agency Anatolia that the US administration considers these allegations "very excluding". He called on Turkey to avoid harming civilians in the area of Afrin and instead protect them.

The Free Syrian Army (FSA) factions participating in the Olive Branch Operation announced on Feb. 6, that 20 fighters had been injured by suffocation, including seven who were in a critical condition after the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) dropped a shell containing toxic chlorine gas on them. The YPG denied this.

The FSA, supported by the Turkish Army, has been conducting the Olive Branch military operation in Afrin since Jan. 20 against the YPG, and gained control of a number of villages and strategic hills in the area.
