Turkey - SMART

On Monday, the municipality of the Turkish capital Ankara renamed the street of the US embassy to "Olive Branch", in reference to the ongoing Olive Branch Operation launched by the Turkish Army and Free Syrian Army (FSA) in the Afrin area, Aleppo, Northern Syria.

The Turkish Radio and Television Corporation wrote on their Twitter account that the new name of the street is "Zeytin dali" in Turkish, meaning "olive branch". The street was renamed in order to link it with the battle of Afrin.

The relationship between Turkey and the United States has become tense due to the US support of the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG). The YPG are the main component of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), and they are currently fighting against the Turkish Army and FSA in the Afrin battle. Turkey considers the YPG a terrorist organization and an extension of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which is globally listed as a terrorist organization.

On Jan. 21, 2018, the Turkish Army and factions of the FSA launched the Olive Branch military operation in the SDF-controlled Afrin area, gaining control of several strategic villages and hills, as clashes continue.
