France - SMART

On Tuesday, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) issued a blank statement to describe its anger towards the suffering of children trapped in Eastern Ghouta of the Syrian capital of Damascus, amid the recent military escalation.

UNICEF for the Middle East and North Africa published, through its official Twitter account, a statement by its Regional Director, Geert Cappelaere, from the Jordanian capital of Amman. It includes, "No words will do justice to the children killed, their mothers, their fathers and their loved ones."

The text followed by ten lines with quotation marks indicating no words. It said, "UNICEF is issuing this blank statement. We no longer have the words to describe children’s suffering and our outrage."

It added, "Do those inflicting the suffering still have words to justify their barbaric acts?," and published "War on children in Syria" and "No more words."

In its statement, UNICEF did not mention precisely who was responsible for the bombing and killing children and their families in Eastern Ghouta.

In the past two days, intense bombings by Syrian loyalist forces and Russia have killed and wounded dozens of children in the towns and cities of besieged Eastern Ghouta. 98 civilians were killed and dozens injured on Monday as well.

Children are the most significant proportion of those in the overcrowded cellars of civilians in Eastern Ghouta, where some have fled escaping the government bombing. Children have stopped going to school during the past months due to the suspension of education for fear of their safety.

UN Special Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura said, hours ago, that the military escalation on Eastern Ghouta could make it "Another Aleppo."
