Turkey, SMART

On Sunday, loyalist forces attempted to storm Eastern Ghouta only one day after a 30-day Syrian truce resolution was approved by the United Nations’ Security Council.

On Saturday night and Sunday morning, the states members of UN Security Council called to pressure Syrian government to implement the UN 2401 resolution. The members approved the resolution unanimously. However, they did not set a date for putting the resolution into force.

Hamza Beriqadar, the spokesman of the Army of Islam, told SMART that loyalist forces attempted to storm the towns of al-Zariqia, Hazrama, Housh al-Dhawahira, and al-Rayhan. Clashes erupted between members of the Army of Islam and loyalist forces in the area.

Beriqadar added that members of Army of Islam bombed loyalist gatherings using heavy artilleries, killing 70 loyalist soldiers and capturing ten others while attempting to storm the area. The bombing also destroyed a loyalist MT55 vehicle, which is used to make bridges.

The Civil Defense said that loyalist forces launched six surface to- surface rockets on Harasta, 11 kilometers east of Damascus. The Civil Defense members checked the targeted locations.

The Civil Defense noted that airstrikes hit al-Shifounia town. Activists said that the airstrikes were suspected to be Russian.

Munzer Fares, the spokesman of the al-Ahrar al-Sham Islamic Movement, said that Russian warplanes were flying over Eastern Ghouta, especially al-Shifounia. This occurred as loyalist forces attempted to storm the area from the direction of the hospitals on the outskirts of Harasta.

Fares added, "we have become familiar with both Russia and Bashar al-Assad’s indifference to and violation of the Security Council's resolutions. Fares considered the 2401 resolution noncommittal to Russia and Assad.

Earlier on Sunday, the Army of Islam and al-Rahman Corps of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) said that their members are committed to the truce.

Russian and loyalist warplanes have been bombing the cities and towns of Eastern Ghouta for a week, killing and injuring dozens of civilians per day. The bombings destroyed infrastructure, hospitals, and bakeries, amidst a 5-year long siege.
