Idlib - SMART

On Sunday, the al-Imam al-Bukhari battalion, which includes foreign fighters from Uzbekistan, declared itself neutral in the ongoing clashes between Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the Syrian Islamic Liberation Front in Northern Syria.

The al-Bukhari battalion called on the rest of the foreign fighters to declare themselves neutral too, and to end their participation in the fighting. The battalion wishes to target the loyalist forces instead, threatening that they will remain on the front line with the loyalist forces.

The al-Bukhari battalion fights in Idlib and the northern countrysides of Hamah and Lattakia. It has participated in several battles against the loyalist forces, the latest of which was during the loyalist attempt to advance toward Eastern and Southeastern Idlib.

One of the foreign fighters, who introduced himself as Abu Zur Azzam, said that he thinks all foreign fighters should declare themselves neutral, but at the same time fight the loyalist forces.

Three Islamist battalions have defected from the HTS and the Liberation Front due to the current clashes between the two parties.

The HTS and the Liberation Front have been clashing in the suburbs of Idlib and Aleppo for days. The clashes have killed and injured civilians, blocked roads, and disrupted traffic and trade. The Liberation Front has advanced in Idlib and gained control of areas in the western suburbs of Aleppo.
