Damascus Suburbs - SMART

The Free Syrian Army (FSA)-affiliated al-Rahman Legion denies Russia's accusations of opposition factions' bombing of civilians trying to leave Eastern Ghouta. Civilians can now leave the area according to the limited truce announced by Russia yesterday.

Earlier today, Russian Army officials accused the opposition factions in Eastern Ghouta of targeting a safe passage with mortar shells, preventing civilians from crossing the passage.

The al-Rahman Legion's spokesman, Wael Alwan, told SMART that "All of what Russia is saying about the [opposition] factions bombing the civilians is far from the truth [...] the factions do not force anything on the civilians."

Alwan added that the civilians in Ghouta "do not feel safe to exit Ghouta as the violent bombings continue even during the limited truce." The people of Ghouta do not wish to become displaced and do not trust the Syrian government, which has not given them any guarantees of safety.

The loyalist forces breached the limited truce announced by Russia in Eastern Ghouta and continued the bombing on the villages and towns in the area, killing a child and injuring several civilians.

Yesterday, Russia announced a truce for five hours every day in Eastern Ghouta from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, starting Tuesday. Later on, the Russian reconciliation center announced that only Douma and Arbin are included in the truce, and that safe passage will only be given to the nearby camp.

The al-Rahman Legion considers Russia's truce "a crime that cannot be tolerated," and the Army of Islam called it an "escape" from the United Nations Security Council's ceasefire resolution. The Damascus Suburbs (Rif Dimashq) provincial council also refuse the truce, considering it a "maneuver" around the UN resolution.

The Russian truce came two days after the UN Security Council approved Resolution 2401, which includes a 30-day ceasefire, an end to the siege of Eastern Ghouta, and permits humanitarian aid and the evacuation of sick and injured civilians.
