Idlib - SMART

On Thursday, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) seized two towns and four villages in Northern Idlib, Northern Syria, after the withdrawal of the Syrian Liberation Front.

The HTS is an opposition group previously known as al-Nusra Front, consisting of fighting groups including the Haqq Brigade, Jabhat Ansar al-Deen, and Jaish al-Sunnah.

The Syrian Liberation Front is an opposition group formed by the two Sunni Islamist groups Ahrar al-Sham and the Nour al-Din al-Zenki Movement. HTS is the main rival of the Syrian Liberation Front in Northwestern Syria.

Activists reported that HTS gained control of the towns of Maara Masreen, Zardana and the villages of Tarmin, Hazara, Deir Hassan and Kafr Hemol in the Northern countryside of Idlib after the ongoing clashes with the Syrian Liberation Front, killing four members of the latter.

The HTS reported that they arrested a number of Syrian Liberation Front fighters and seized their weapons.

On Wednesday, the Syrian Liberation Front and the HTS agreed to exit several towns and villages in the southern Idlib province and the northern Hama province, leaving them neutral in the ongoing clashes.

HTS and the Syrian Liberation Front have been clashing in the countrysides of Idlib and Aleppo for days, resulting in the killing and injury of dozens of civilians. Major roads have been blocked, disrupting traffic and trade.
