Daraa - SMART

A group from the Rweidan tribe shot and killed a reporter from the Ashaer brigade, which is affiliated with the Free Syrian Army, after sectarian tension between the two groups. A Civil Defense volunteer was also injured, and the attack happened on the road between the towns of Hrak and Nahita, Eastern Daraa, Southern Syria.

The commander of the Ashaer brigade, Safi al-Khalaf, said that the reporter Abdullah al-Khalaf and the volunteer Mahmoud al-Khalaf were returning from a media training course in the town of Hrak when they were ambushed by a group from the Rweidan tribe.

Al-Khalaf reported that the same group assassinated the former commander of the brigade, Talal al-Khalaf, and three other fighters last year. They were killed by a bomb after the commander broke into the house of a member of the Shamekh tribe. Talal al-Khalaf was accused of working with the Khalid Ibn al-Walid brigade, which is accused of being affiliated with the Islamic State. Al-Khalaf was killed during clashes with the Shamekh tribe after he refused to surrender.

Safi al-Khalaf, the current commander, added that the brigade is on the move between the towns and cities of Daraa without staying in one place for long, because he believes an operation is being prepared to assassinate their fighters.

Crime, such as robbery and assassinations, is on the rise in Daraa. Local activists describe the situation as unsafe, and weapons are a common sight. Kidnappings have also increased in Sweida and Daraa, and even civilians are kidnapped for ransoms.
