Idlib - SMART

On Monday, Syrian Civil Defense volunteers evacuated the entire medical staff of the hospital in the city of Maarrat al-Nu'man, 30 km south of Idlib, Northern Syria, after they had been trapped inside the hospital during clashes between the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the Syrian Liberation Front.

Doctor Abdul Hamid Dabbak made a distress call from inside the hospital via a sound recording heard by SMART. He reported that they had been trapped since 5:00 am due to the ongoing clashes between the HTS and the Syrian Liberation Front.

Dr Dabbak added that members of the Ahrar al-Sham movement, which is part of the Syrian Liberation Front, were stationed on the roof of the hospital. The medical staff urged them out, but they returned to the hospital again and refused leave, because they were under fire by the HTS. The HTS' firing on the hospital is what trapped the medical staff inside.

Dr Dabbak also reported that they were waiting for the Civil Defense to evacuate them, and that they would shut down the hospital because of the fighting. He announced in another audio recording that they had begun to leave the hospital with the help of Civil Defense teams.

Activists from Maarrat al-Nu'man told SMART that mutual fire between the Syrian Liberation Front and the HTS wounded a woman and a child in the vicinity of the city this afternoon, amid ongoing clashes between the groups.

This morning, clashes between the two groups also took place in the towns of Talmans and Ma'arshurin south of Idlib. The Syrian Liberation Front announced that they captured 20 members of the HTS and killed and wounded others, as they tried to advance towards the village of Ma’arshurin.

The Syrian Liberation Front and the HTS have been clashing in the countrysides of Aleppo and Idlib since Feb. 20, killing and injuring civilians, and blocking roads and commercial traffic, amid the advance of the Syrian Liberation Front. The people of Idlib and Aleppo condemn the HTS and their leader, Abu Muhammad al-Julani, and call for the fighting groups to withdraw from their cities and towns.
