Turkey - SMART

On Monday, Turkey appealed to the United States to prevent the relocation of four divisions of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) from Eastern Syria to Afrin, Northern Aleppo, Northern Syria. The Turkish Army and Free Syrian Army (FSA) have launched a military campaign against the SDF in Afrin to expel it from the area, but the SDF will increase their forces with 17,000 fighters.

Ibrahim Kalin, the special adviser to the Turkish president, said that Turkey awaits a response after making emergency calls via the official channels with the US to prevent the relocation of the SDF forces to Afrin.

Abu Omar al-Idlbi, the Commander of the Northern Democratic Brigade of the SDF, told SMART that they will relocate 17,000 fighters from Eastern Syria to Afrin.

On Jan. 21, FSA factions and the Turkish Army launched the Olive Branch military operation against the SDF in Afrin, and have succeeded in gaining control of Afrin's borderline with Turkey. The clashes are still ongoing.
