Rif Dimashq - SMART

On Thursday, Russia and Syrian loyalist forces renewed intensive bombardment, killing and wounding civilians in the cities and towns of Eastern Ghouta in the Syrian capital Damascus.

Local activists reported that cluster bombs from Russian warplanes killed around 10 civilians in residential areas of the city Zamalka.

The Civil Defense in Rif Dimashq wrote on its Facebook page that repeated aerial bombardment on the town Hamouriya wounded civilians. It also pointed out that in recent hours, more than 35 air raids hit residential neighborhoods of the town.

Further according to the Civil Defense, on Wednesday suspected Russian warplanes launched six raids on the town of Jisreen, killing 11 civilians.

Russian warplane raids also injured civilians in the city of Irbin, coinciding  with artillery shelling by the loyalist forces on the city. Around 25 air raids on the nearby town of Saqba were documented.

The Civil Defense reported that on Wednesday, Russian bombings had killed one of its volunteers. The bombing targeted an ambulance carrying volunteers of the Civil Defense, killing two of them while wounding five others.

Local activists posted photos on social media showing the moment when loyalist forces targeted areas of Eastern Ghouta using phosphorus gas.

Today, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced postponing its entry of humanitarian aid to Eastern Ghouta.

In recent hours, government helicopters threw explosive barrels loaded with toxic chlorine gas on residential areas between the city of Saqba and the town of Hamouriya, suffocating 124 civilians, most of them women and children.

These developments came despite the Security Council’s adoption of Resolution 2401 on Feb. 24 calling for thirty-day truce in Syria. This happened two days before Russia announced a ceasefire of five-hours per day.
