Rif Dimashq - SMART

On Thursday, Duma local council appealed to international and humanitarian organizations, the United Nations, and all countries to put an end to the "heinous crimes" committed by the Syrian government and their allies in Eastern Ghouta, Rif Dimashq governorate.

The council reported, "The crimes in Ghouta exceeded all perceptions of what the Syrian government and supporting forces are capable of. They used all kinds of weapons against civilians, including chemical weapons." The council also demanded the immediate entry of medical aid and relief into Ghouta.

The council described what is happening in Ghouta as a "holocaust" forced by the Syrian government and its allies. The council also reported that there are about half a million people in and around Duma, living in a "tragic" humanitarian situation. Many families came to Duma after being displaced from nearby cities, towns and agricultural areas.

The council pointed out that the intense shelling on Duma has damaged more than five thousand apartments, and destroyed many public facilities and health centers. The city also suffers from scarcity of food and medicine due to the imposed siege on Ghouta.

On Feb. 18, the loyalist forces and Russia launched a military campaign on Eastern Ghouta, killing and injuring hundreds of civilians. The government has recently advanced in several important towns and farms in the region. The government uses all kinds of weapons against Ghouta, including toxic chlorine gas and other internationally banned chemical weapons.

The Civil Defense documented the suffocation of 124 civilians yesterday, as a result of the chlorine toxic gas attack by loyalist forces on residential area in Eastern Ghouta.

Most civilians trapped in Ghouta live in uninhabitable cellars that lack the most basic necessities of life. Many civilians have not left their cellars for 20 days due to the intense bombings.
