The United States Defense Secretary James Mattis warned the Syrian government about the use of chemical weapons against civilians in Syria and criticized the Russian support of the Syrian government.

Mattis said to reporters before his official visit to Oman that the Syrian government "would be ill-advised” to launch more chemical attacks (…) I think President Donald Trump made that very clear when he was elected. President Trump has the authority to take any decision he sees suitable," according to al-Hurra website.

Despite the warnings, Mattis did not threaten to sanction the Syrian government if their forces continue to use chemical weapons.

Mattis said that the US does not have recent evidence of the use of chlorine gas, but he noted the media reports documenting its use.

Mattis also criticized Russia's continued support to the Syrian government, saying that either Russia is incapable of stopping Bashar al-Assad's crimes or they are an accomplice. There are several reports about the use of chlorine gas in Syria and the symptoms it causes.

Mattis added that Russia might be helping the Syrian government to strike civilians, saying "I would prefer not to guess if the warplanes that dropped the chlorine gas were Russian or Syrian."

Earlier, France threated to sanction the Syrian government if they continue to use chemical weapons in Syria. The threats came days after the French President stated that a French- American "harsh" retaliation will follow if evidence confirms the use of chemical weapons.

On Wednesday, the Syrian Civil Defense documented more than one hundred suffocation cases after the loyalist forces targeted a residential district in Eastern Ghouta with chlorine gas. The Civil Defense said that the volunteers evacuated 124 civilians, including more than one hundred children and women, who suffered from suffocation after loyalist helicopters dropped an explosive barrel with chlorine gas between Saqbah and Hamouriyah.

The loyalist forces have used chlorine gas on the town of Hamouriyah before, causing 30 suffocation cases among civilians, including 15 children and 13 women. In February, the Civil Defense and activists documented the killing of a child and the injuries of others after the loyalist forces targeted the town of Shayfoniah with chlorine gas. The loyalist forces also targeted the city of Duma with similar shells of chlorine gas, causing the suffocation of dozens of civilians.
