Aleppo - SMART

On Tuesday, Turkish military announced that they have surrounded the town of Afrin, 42 kilometers west of Aleppo, Northern Syria, 52 days after launching the Olive Branch Operation.

The Turkish military said in a statement that their forces surrounded Afrin town on Monday and also captured “areas of critical importance” as a result of the ongoing operations in the region, according to the Turkish news agency Anadolu.

A total of 3,393 Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) fighters have been "neutralized" since the operation was launched on Jan. 21, 2018, according to another statement.

Local activists deny that the Turkish forces have surrounded the town, pointing out that six kilometers separate the Turkish Army and Free Syrian Army (FSA) factions from the eastern and western sides of Afrin.

On Sunday, Muhammad Hamadin, the spokesman of the FSA, said that the communication failure between the Kurdish Democratic Union Party and their military arm, the YPG, is the reason for the FSA's success in Afrin. Hamadin added that they have gained control of more than 150 villages since the beginning of the military operation.

The FSA factions continue to advance in several parts of the Afrin area, and have gained control of the major areas of Jindayris, Sharan, Bulbul, Sheikh al-Hadid, and al-Khaldiyah. The FSA has also gained total control of the borderline area between Afrin and Turkey.
