Rif Dimashq - SMART

On Tuesday, the Syrian Red Crescent evacuated 35 civilian patients from Eastern Ghouta, Rif Dimashq governorate, for treatment in the hospitals of Damascus.

On Monday, the Jaysh al-Islam, which is allied with the Free Syrian Army and fights against the al-Nusra Front, the Islamic State, and the loyalist forces, announced that it has reached an agreement with Russia to evacuate patients and wounded from Eastern Ghouta to receive treatment in batches. This agreement comes under the United Nations resolutions 2254 and 2401 in regard to the conditions of war and siege. Medical staff and medicine have not been allowed to enter Ghouta in six years, and hospitals and medical clinics in the besieged enclave have been targeted regularly.

The director of the political office of the Jaysh al-Islam, Yasser Delwan, told SMART that the patients who were evacuated are civilians from a list given to the Red Crescent a while ago. Delwan noted that the evacuation took place after ensuring the safety of the patients. Delwan does not have information about the exact number of patients scheduled to be evacuated.

Activists added that the government calls the evacuation a displacement, but the activists call it an evacuation. The government media takes photos of the citizens as they leave on green buses from the nearby camp. The activists stressed that the patients will return to Ghouta after their recovery.

This is the first evacuation of patients since the beginning of the Syrian government’s campaign to gain control of Ghouta. The campaign was launched on Feb. 18, and has killed and injured thousands of civilians. A number of patients were evacuated last year, but many died from injuries and diseases.
