Turkey - SMART

The spokesperson of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Syria, Linda Tom, said that more than 12,000 people fled from Eastern Ghouta due to the military operations, pointing out that hundreds are still fleeing.

On Thursday, thousands of civilians were evacuated from Eastern Ghouta to nearby areas controlled by the government, coinciding with the advancement of government forces in the area after they opened a crossing through the farms of Hammouriya (according to local activists).

Tom added that more than 48,000 people left Afrin due to battles between the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and the Turkish Army, along with Free Syrian Army (FSA) factions of the Olive Branch Operation.

300 out of 400 displaced families from Afrin arrived in the FSA-controlled areas in Northern Aleppo. The families were waiting near the village of Qastal to flee from Afrin.

Russian and government forces continue to bomb the residential neighborhoods of Eastern Ghouta after besieging it for years. The bombings have killed and injured thousands, mostly women and children, in addition to destroying infrastructure of the area.

The residents of Afrin fled after Turkish warplanes targeted the al-Ahlam YPG checkpoint which was preventing civilians from leaving according to an FSA commander.
