Turkey, SMART

On Sunday, loyalist forces seized the city of Saqba, 9 kilometers east of Damascus, Rif Dimashq governorate.

A local activist reported to SMART that the loyalist forces seized Saqba after al-Rahman Legion fighters and other fighters from Saqba withdrew from the city. The activist added that a delegation of dignitaries from the town of al-Aftaris have left the town to go to areas under the loyalist forces’ control. They left for their own safety while at the same time assuring the residents of Saqba that the loyalist forces will keep civilians safe.

Loyalist media outlets broadcasted live coverage from Saqba, showing loyalist members travelling down roads and bulldozers removing the rubble of previous Russian and loyalist bombings on the city.

On Saturday, loyalist forces gained control of 75 percent of the cities of Saqba and Hamouria and the town of Jisreen amidst clashes with the al-Rahman Legion of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) who returned to fight. The Russian Defense Ministry said that 7,000 people left Ghouta through the Hamouria crossing.

On Feb. 18, the loyalist forces and their militias, backed up by Russia, launched a military operation on Eastern Ghouta, killing and injuring thousands of civilians and destroying infrastructure. The military operation continues despite the United Nations Security Council resolution 2401, which calls for a 30-day ceasefire in Syria and the lifting of the siege on Ghouta.
