Aleppo - SMART

On Sunday, the Kurdish Autonomous Administration in the Afrin area, Northwestern Aleppo, Northern Syria,  promised to retaliate against the Turkish Army and Free Syrian Army (FSA) factions currently fighting to gain control of Afrin.

Earlier on Sunday, the FSA seized the entire city of Afrin, 43 kilometers northwest of Aleppo, without violent confrontations with the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG).

The Kurdish Administration said in a statement seen by SMART that the YPG battles against Turkey and the FSA have not ended yet, adding that the YPG fighters will move from "head on" confrontations to “hit and retreat” attacks, aiming to drain the Turkish Army and FSA factions, and to neutralize civilians from the battles.

The Kurdish Administration noted that their fighters are still spread across the whole Afrin area, and they will launch attacks when possible.

The Kurdish Administration accused Russia and unnamed regional powers of taking part in the Turkish military operation in Afrin, amidst silence from the International Coalition, the Islamic State, and the United Nations Security Council.

The Kurdish Administration appealed to the UN Security Council to pressure Turkey to stop the military operations in the area, and to allow Kurdish residents to return to their towns and cities under international guarantees.

The Kurdish Administration said in a statement that the Olive Branch operation has killed 500 civilians, including women and children, and injured 1,030 others. The Administration added that the operation has also killed 820 and injured thousands of fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

On Jan. 20, 2018, the Turkish Head of the General Staff and FSA factions launched the Olive Branch operation in the Afrin area against the YPG. During the operation, the factions have gained control of Afrin city and nearby towns. The Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, promises that Turkey will oust the "terrorist" YPG from Manbij, Ain al-Arab, Tel Abyyad, Ras al-Ain, and Qamishli, after liberating Afrin.
