Rif Dimashq - SMART

The local council in the city of Douma, Eastern Ghouta, reports that 412 civilians, including 76 children, have been killed in the past 24 days by the Syrian government and Russian bombing.

The council published death toll statistics from the period between Feb. 19 and Mar. 14, 2018. The statistics show the death of 258 men, 78 women, 44 boys and 21 girls, in addition to nine newborns boys and two newborn girls.

The government forces escalated the bombing of Douma on Sunday evening. The bombing killed five civilians, including a woman, a child, and an unknown civilian, and injured dozens. The Civil Defense reported that residential neighborhoods were targeted with toxic gases.

The bombing continues despite the Russian ceasefire in Douma. The ceasefire announcement was followed by relative calm, with sporadic shelling during the visit of the United Nations and Red Cross delegation to the city.

The Syrian government forces have divided Eastern Ghouta into two halves after escalating the bombing on Ghouta on Feb. 18. The northern half includes the city of Douma, which is controlled by the Jaysh al-Islam, and the city of Harasta, which is controlled by the Ahrar al-Sham Islamic Movement. The reinforcement roads between the two cities are blocked.

The government forces have gained control over major cities in the southern half, which is controlled by the al-Rahman Legion. Earlier on Sunday, the government forces gained control of Saqba and Kafr Batna, followed by the towns of Hamouriah and Jisreen. The al-Rahman Legion still controls Arbi and Zamalka, the town of Ain Tarma, and the Jobar neighborhood.
