Rif Dimashq - SMART

On Sunday, Hamza Beriqdar, the spokesman of the Jaysh al-Islam, told SMART that their fighters are still defending Eastern Ghouta, whose residents reject the policy of forced displacement and demographic change.

Beriqdar added, "The opposition factions are still fighting in Ghouta and have killed many members of the loyalist forces. God willing, the factions will regain control of the outposts they surrendered."

Beriqdar's statements coincided with the continued loyalist bombing on Douma, which is controlled by the Jaysh al-Islam, despite the Russian ceasefire announced days ago. The Civil Defense reported that the loyalist forces targets Douma with toxic gases.

The Syrian government forces divided Eastern Ghouta into two halves after escalating the bombing on Ghouta on Feb. 18. The northern half includes the city of Douma, which is controlled by the Jaysh al-Islam, and the city of Harasta, which is controlled by the Ahrar al-Sham Islamic Movement. The reinforcement roads between the two cities are blocked.

The government forces have gained control over major cities in the southern half, which is controlled by the al-Rahman Legion. Earlier on Sunday, the government forces gained control of Saqba and Kafr Batna, followed by the towns of Hamouriah and Jisreen. The al-Rahman Legion still controls Arbi and Zamalka, the town of Ain Tarma, and the Jobar neighborhood.
